Sala Silver Mine

Västmanland

At a depth of 155 meters, it is terribly cold and humid. It started as a small-scale mine in the 12th century and at the end of the 15th century the mining really got started, but the large-scale mining the took place during the 1530-1540s. Gustav Vasa called the mine the treasury of the kingdom.  Sala Silvergruva offers various guided tours, as it is not allowed to walk around the mine on your own.  The guide will take you on a historical journey on how people worked and lived during this time. Do not forget to knock three times on the mine wall before you enter so the Mine Wife knows you are coming.
